About Consuelo Candelaria

Consuelo Candelaria is a highly acclaimed jazz pianist, composer, and arranger recognized and praised for her rhythmic phrasing and harmonic depth. Specializing in original jazz compositions, Latin jazz, and the traditional piano trio format, her musical approach draws heavily from the traditions and mentorship of pianists like Donald Brown, James Williams, and Mulgrew Miller. Throughout her career, she has performed internationally in a variety of settings, leading the Consuelo Candelaria Trio and collaborating with projects like the Bill Pierce Quintet and the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra.

Hailing from New Mexico as the youngest of eight children, Consuelo’s lifelong relationship with the piano began at age five under remarkable circumstances. Following a drunk driver accident that left her deaf in her left ear, she ironically began playing that very same year, developing a deeply personal, intuitive connection to sound. Supported by an encouraging family who constantly created opportunities for her to learn, her true calling crystallized in high school when her band director—a wonderful pianist and educator—introduced her to jazz. She went on to attend Berklee College of Music on a scholarship, immersing herself in a community of world-class musicians. She was asked to join the faculty when she was 23 years old.

What sets Consuelo apart is this rare, resilient ability to fuse rigorous and beautiful harmonic structures with deep percussive momentum, while embracing  relaxed, landscapy, and atmospheric musical textures. While her career is defined by profound collaborations with jazz masters, family has always been the central thread of her life; her most important highlights remain her husband and their two children. Now that her children are grown, she has the dedicated time and focus to open her deep archive of music.

Currently, Consuelo is preparing a digital vault release of studio recordings, opening her personal archives to bring these hidden tracks to streaming platforms for the first time. Alongside her active performance career—which includes playing with her own trio, the Ron Savage Quintet (featuring Ron Mahdi, Bill Pierce, and Bobby Broom), and recording upcoming 2027 music with her husband, guitarist Kevin Barry—she has three other complete records in the can ready to release over time. When not performing, she brings this lifetime of experience to her role as a Full Professor at Berklee College of Music, where she shares her expertise in original jazz compositions and musical concepts in general with the next generation of musicians.

From listening to her recordings, I realized she has become one of the great masters of jazz piano and a first-rate composer. It is an honor and privilege to give her my highest endorsement.”
